New Chinese Tariff on Brazilian Beef

New tariff on Brazilian beef

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced the application of an additional 55% tariff on beef imports from Brazil. The customs measure takes effect this Thursday. The official announcement was made on Wednesday, shortly after the Chinese customs administration confirmed the import volumes of the Brazilian product.

The export quota limit

The imposition of the surcharge is directly linked to export volumes. Chinese customs confirmed that Brazil has fully utilized its permitted quota of 1.106 million tons. Under established trade rules, reaching the full quota triggers the application of the extra tariff on subsequent shipments.

Attempt to use Uruguay’s quota

Given the exhaustion of the Brazilian quota, industry sources indicated that there was an attempt to seek alternatives to avoid the surcharge. The proposal involved allowing Brazilian exporters to use Uruguay’s remaining, unfilled import quota. However, the Chinese government rejected the request and did not agree to share Uruguay’s quota with Brazil.

Practical implications

The episode illustrates China’s strict enforcement of import regulations. The rigorous monitoring of quotas and the refusal to offer flexibility between neighboring countries highlight the importance of continuous monitoring of export volumes. Cross-border trade operators must closely observe customs limits to understand potential tariff impacts.
